Your story is your strategy!

You don’t need a perfectly polished brand, 100K followers, or an Ivy League resume to succeed, but you do need to be yourself. More than ever, people are craving connection. People are attracted to what’s genuine.

Something people ask me frequently is how I maintain my authenticity. IMO, maintaining authenticity isn’t hard if you’re actually authentic…so what the heck is going on that no one seems to be authentic anymore?

Why is it so hard for people to be authentic?

The opportunity to build my community, brand, and a lot of my career came from sharing my story and being honest about who I am. It directed me to the right people, the people who identified with me and were interested in what I had to share.

But let’s be honest… Being authentic isn’t always easy

Authenticity seems easy in theory, but in practice it takes courage. Why? Because we live in a world of expectations. Being authentic may even mean showing up before you’re ready. Authenticity requires you to reveal who you are in the moment, not necessarily where you wish to be.

Let’s really take a dive into why authenticity can feel hard:

  • Fear of judgment: When you show who you really are — your values, your story, your struggles, there’s always the risk that someone won’t get it, or worse, they’ll criticize it.

  • Pressure to conform: Whether it’s corporate culture, social media trends, or societal expectations, there’s often an unspoken pressure to “fit in.” And fitting in is the enemy of standing out, which might just be the thing you need to obtain success.

  • Imposter syndrome: Many people think, “Who am I to share this? Am I qualified?” or “Why would anyone care?”. But the truth is, your lived experience is your unique advantage. Your experience and the fact that it belongs to you is the qualification.

  • Vulnerability hangovers: Sometimes, being real can feel like an emotional risk. You hit “post” or speak your truth, which may feel great in the moment… But then reality settles in and you may begin to wonder if you overshared. That’s normal. It means you’re stretching. It means you’re trying something outside of your comfort zone and you’re growing.

Despite the discomfort, being authentic builds something stronger than a "perfect" persona ever could: trust. And trust is the real currency of all major aspects of life: business, community, and overall relationships.

How to lead with authenticity

Get clear on your values. Who are you and what matters to you most? Write it down. Build everything from there. Never stray from the baseline of who you are. Remember that the right people will find you, and if someone doesn’t like who you are, those simply aren’t your people and you didn’t want them anyways.

Say no to things that don’t align. That includes people, partnerships, and platforms. Protect your vibe. Receiving opportunities, especially big ones can be really exciting, but you must always remember who you are and the story you have sold. If your actions don’t align with who you have convinced people you are, the trust of your audience will be broken.

Engage with vulnerability. Start conversations with your audience, don’t just talk at them, talk to them, and know its okay to show the “messy stuff”. Of course you may want to lead with professionalism and respect, but things don’t always have to be picture-perfect. Its okay to show the process and let your audience in on your world.

Remember: You are enough. Your story is powerful and the world needs what only you can offer.

There’s no need to wait to be “ready”. Be real instead. Thanks for reading, and as always, I will see you next week.
