Is it time to get out?
Hey Fearless Friend!
Today on Stay Fearless or Die Trying:
Leaving your hometown: Is it time to move on?
I’m speaking at Harvard on October 6th!
Fearless perks of the week!
Small Hometowns Can Be Suffocating.
If you’ve been with me for a while, you know how I left my small hometown at 16 to pursue my dreams. I packed up nine suitcases (yes, I needed all nine!) and journeyed to Brooklyn, NY with a credit card and a dream.
I will say, what I did may not be the answer for everyone. But packing up and leaving, damn the consequences, was truly the best thing I ever did. It started me on this wild ride that has led to my fearless life.
If you’re a fresh-faced adult, struggling with the claustrophobic feel of your town, it’s probably time to move on. So to answer the question quickly “Is it time to get out?” If you even have to ask that question, the answer is YES! Here are three pieces of advice I wish I had when I journeyed out ten years ago.
1. Feel the fear, and do it anyway.
One of the hardest things about moving away is conquering that fear. That’s one of the reasons I named this newsletter Be Fearless or Die Trying. You have to take that leap into the unknown and accept that you may fail, it may all fall apart. You may have to go back home! That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try at all. What’s that cliché quote? “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” -Wayne Gretsky. Now I was never very good at basketball, but I have made a career out of shooting for the moon. Even if you fail, you will have learned something in the process. Is it even really a failure if you learned along the way? The fear of failure should never stop you from doing something, especially if the potential success could change your life.
2. Brush off the haters!
I mention in this week’s solo special edition of Dare to Be Fearless that I wish I told fewer people about my plans to leave. What is new and exciting for you will surely spark jealousy in others. People may even try to talk you out of it. The best way to prevent unwanted opinions is to remove the option for people to give them to you. To those that you truly feel like you have their support, let them know. But to everyone else, you can be here one day, gone the next. You don’t owe your hometown anything.
3. When you know, you know.
TRUST. YOUR. GUT. Mine has led me from NY, to Boston, to LA and Austin. Now all the way to LONDON! Every time I had a gut feeling like something more was out there for me. If you feel like your career or goals can be achieved somewhere new, that’s enough evidence that it’s time to move. The drive that has led you to even consider leaving, is the drive that will steer you toward success. So get on that train, pitch that brand, record that podcast. You are the only one in control of your life, your destiny. Take advantage of being YOU!
