Networking: Tips From The Best

Striking up a conversation during a networking event already gets you halfway to success. It’s important to know what to say and what to avoid so you don’t get caught up in a BS convo! Those are the worst - am I right?

1. DO: Ask open-ended questions!

Asking questions that prompt a simple “yes” or “no” answer is detrimental when we’re in the business of going deep, ya know? You want the person you’re connecting with to open up to you, to feel connected, and to feel like you’re interested. Instead of asking “Do you like your job?” ask “What do you like most about your job?”

This style of discussion prompts someone to expand upon a simple answer and allows them to dive into their business.

2. DON’T: Be afraid of personal anecdotes!

As John Hill, former LinkedIn exec suggests, there’s always a pressure to keep networking conversations professional. While this IS good advice, you have to be careful not to sound too professional where there’s no real room for connection. You can easily talk about personal experiences in business, and within some aspects of your personal life, while networking. For example, if you’re chatting with an accountant, you can mention that you always sucked at math in school and are so impressed with people that excel at it - does he have any tips?

3. DO: Use your body language!

Nothing is a bigger turn off in a professional setting than someone who is constantly scanning the room for other connections while they’re talking to you. It is important to stay engaged, use your body language, and make the person you’re talking with feel heard and seen. The same way you’d want to have someone speak to you that way, too. Turning your body towards someone, making eye contact, etc. will give you a leg up on competition that is too busy with their next potential connection.

Reading Update: Key Takeaways!

It starts off a little slow, but I love all of the nuggets of wisdom this book provides. When I read about the Pygmalion effect it hit me hard. It's this idea that what someone expects from another person can actually make that thing happen, like a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've totally seen this in my own life, you know? Like, back in school, I got picked for this special program where they called all of us "creative" and "gifted." It kinda made us believe we were, even if we weren't sure about it! It's like, positive brainwashing or something. We all started acting like we were the gifted ones because that’s what was expected of us. Sometimes I think it was all a big social experiment or something, but yeah, we totally defied the low expectations and just went for the high ones.

Weekly Quote

"Small talk is not about filling the silence; it's about creating a bridge to deeper conversations. It's where relationships start and opportunities are uncovered."
