How To Break Into Media
Hey Fearless Friend!
Today on Stay Fearless or Die Trying:
I sat down with a mother whose son died in the Sandy Hook shooting. Hear her story below.
How to break into TV/media and get attention from the people you need to get in front of.

What’s the deal with breaking into media?
There’s definitely a deal, kids. And it depends how badly you want to break in.
This was my first TV segment when I was 14-years-old.
How’d I get on TV at 14-years-old?! A cold pitch. It was the worst cold pitch you’ll ever see, but it got me in the door.
1. Start by Creating Your Own Content
Your journey begins with creating content that showcases your talent and personality. Whether it's a podcast, blog, YouTube channel, or TikTok series, use the tools you already have. A smartphone, free editing apps (like iMovie or CapCut), and social media platforms are enough to get started.
Pro Tip: Focus on quality over quantity. Post consistently and aim to create content that reflects your interests and expertise. This will give producers and media professionals a clear sense of your style and voice.
2. Make a Reel (For Less Than $200)
Your reel is your calling card. It’s a short, engaging video that highlights your on-camera presence, storytelling skills, and personality. Keep it professional but authentic.
Pro Tip: Keep your reel under 2 minutes, and ensure it’s concise and engaging from the start.
3. Cold Outreach to Producers
Once your reel is ready, it’s time to pitch yourself. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—create them!
Research Producers: Look for producers of shows, podcasts, or platforms aligned with your niche. LinkedIn, social media, and online industry directories are your best tools.
Write a Killer Email: Your email should be short, personalized, and to the point.
Start with a friendly introduction.
Briefly explain your niche and why you’d be a great fit for their platform.
Attach your reel and include links to your best content.
Pro Tip: Follow up after a week if you don’t hear back. Persistence is key.
4. Find Your Niche
The media world is saturated, but standing out is easier when you focus on a niche. Ask yourself:
What topics am I passionate about?
What unique perspective can I offer?
Who is my audience?
Whether it’s travel, mental health, pop culture, or tech, narrowing your focus will help you build a loyal audience and establish yourself as an authority in that space.
Pro Tip: Use your niche to create content that’s hyper-relevant to current trends. This will increase your chances of going viral and catching the attention of media professionals.
I have room to take on 2-3 more coaching clients this quarter. What does that entail?
I love working with aspiring or current founders who are struggling with tasks like how to start a podcast, how to find their niche, or how to find product market fit.
I’ve been in the business world for 10+ years, so I know the ups and downs of launching something.
