What you’re doing wrong when networking:

On Dare To Be Fearless this week (audio + video) I go over things like how Chief Swag Officer is doing, what I learnt about hiring when launching this company, and what you’re doing wrong when networking/cold calling + driving sales.

I also tackle something that one of my good friends has been struggling with: not knowing what to say to people who ask what you’re doing when you simply have no idea.

It’s not a crime to tell someone you’re taking a beat, whether that be 3 days or 3 months to decide what the next step of your life is going to be.

Alexa’s Fearless Networking Tips:

  • When someone asks you what you’re doing and you don’t know what you’re doing, say this: “I’m exploring new opportunities right now after having worked in X industry for the past X years”

  • If you don’t follow-up within 48 hours of meeting someone at a networking event, you’re losing so much business.

  • How I prevent forgetting to follow-up with someone is setting a scheduled email upon meeting someone (for example, if I attend an event at 9 AM, I’ll set a scheduled email to go out to the person I just met 4-5 hours following the event) and I write this draft email WHILE at the event. Sneak to the bathroom, the coffee bar or where the snacks are to write and schedule your draft.

The simplest follow-up email is… (copy and paste this to save in your drafts for your next event)

“Hi Alexa! It was great to meet you earlier. I wanted to follow-up and introduce myself as I’m currently working on X and think there may be some synergy between your work and mine. I’d love to jump on a call or get a coffee and chat through some ideas I have!”

  • This draft is perfect if you’re a self starter/founder or looking to explore new opportunities in consulting/PR/marketing. This could also be used for more technical jobs like sales or SAAS roles. I highly suggest you replace the name Alexa but if you like my name so much, network solely with people named Alexa so you never have to swap names out.
