Why Cold Calling Isn't Dead

Trust the process!

Hi Fearless Friend!

This week on Stay Fearless or Die Trying:

  1. How to properly “cold call” and why you should have this tool in your arsenal

  2. Premium reminder!

  3. A new book poll…. tell me what I should read!

Before getting into this week’s newsletter, if you follow me on Instagram and want to know what Be Fearless is, it’s my passion project and second startup. I’ve been hosting career conferences since 2018, and this is the first event that isn’t in partnership with a university.

In NYC in April and want to attend? Reply to this email and I’ll give you 50% off of a ticket for being a subscriber. Read more about Be Fearless here.

Cold Calling: What Are You Doing Wrong?

Freezing Sesame Street GIF by Willem Dafriend

Cold calling is like sliding into someone's DMs, but for business. It’s awkward, annoying, and filled with rejection. The rejection you will face if you are as determined as I am to become a successful entrepreneur may be enough for you to want to give up.

When I want to give up I do this…

  1. Go on a walk without my cell phone

  2. Go on a walk and scream at a wall nearby whatever WeWork I am at that day (this technique works)

  3. Remember how many people became uber successful after age 40

  4. Go back to WeWork and get back to work

Cold calling is a shot in the dark, like shooting your shot without any likes or mutual friends to back you up. You're calling or emailing strangers, trying to turn a cold lead into a warm chat, hoping they'll be into whatever you're offering. It's all about making that first move, even if it feels like calling out into the void, and hoping someone on the other end is willing to listen and engage.

This week in particular was a rough one: I spent close to 3 hours on phone calls with potential leads and every proposal was rejected. The worst part? Not knowing why and not being able to do anything but…

Find someone new to call.

1. Who to call!

First, you have to figure out who you want to reach out to. Should you cold call potential clients/customers? Industry peers? Yes and yes! There isn’t a limit to who can be useful to reach out to. You can use these cold calls as a strategy to get new clients or investors, to connect with experts in your field, or to market your business in your community. Reaching out will only set you apart from your peers and make you the 1% in business.

2. What to say!

Next, you have to figure out what to say when they answer the phone. There is a sales strategy behind cold calling. It goes like:

Find the problem they’re facing

Understand why they’re facing this problem

Understand who decides the budget and who makes the decision

Send a proposal

Follow-up

It isn’t smart to jump right into a pitch on your services: you’re not a robot and you’re not selling insurance. Connecting with someone personally, “I love that your business does ___ and I think I can be an asset to ___!” helps.

Coming to the table with specific examples of ways you can benefit a team is important. Otherwise, you’re just calling and giving them a blanket ad for your business that will get you blocked.

3. Turn that no into a YES!

The first time you reach out, and even a few times after that, you are likely to get a “No.” It’s important to know tactics to turn that no into a yes! It takes time, effort, and practice. Use my tips and follow them like clockwork. You have to understand where the “no” is coming from. Is it because your services aren’t what they're looking for right now? Well, what services ARE they looking for right now? How can your business fill that need? If it is based on finances, they may claim they don’t have the cash flow to support you right now, consider giving them a discount on your services to make it more worth their while. Did you just not sound professional and helpful enough? Practice makes perfect! Hone your craft and work on ways to better show that you’ve got what they need.
