Are you meant to be doing this?

Good Luck Charlie Idk GIF

As I went about writing my Harvard speech, I started thinking about how badly I wanted to go to an Ivy league school. NGL, I still do.

My entire life I’ve thrown ideas at the wall, tried to make things stick, because I realized quite early on in my journey of life that I was a bit different. My brain never seemed wired to be able to do what you guys have done, but I equally knew that I could spend my life wondering why I was different or I could do something about it.

There is nothing better or bigger about me or you or vice versa. If you walk away today with anything, it’s that you have the power to do everything.

But the only person who is going to make your career success happen is you. For years and even now I am always told no, constantly rejected in the world of business, but today I can truly say I am so glad I never leaned in to the people who rejected me.

1. Can you handle the rejection?

Even when you feel like you’re making it, the rejection in business is through the roof. You’ll know if you’re able to get through it if you answer “yes” to 2/3 of the below:

  1. Do you ask people why they rejected you, and if so do you acknowledge their feedback in an honest and easy way, not a condescending way?

  2. Does rejection entice you to do more?

  3. Do you overthink asking someone for help or for feedback, so much that you end up on the brink of not asking them?

  4. Do you view rejection in your personal and business life to be the same?

I answer yes to ¾ of the questions. The ability to handle your s***, not take rejection personally AND ask people why they’re rejecting you means you’re destined for this crazy ride.

2. Are you even slightly patient?

I spoke to my therapist yesterday and I find we circle back to a constant theme: my impatience.

I attribute a lot of my impatience to my generation: I was raised with a cell phone, with access to my wildest dreams 24/7, with access to people who are doing the craziest most incredible things in the world that make ME think I too can achieve that kind of success!!!

You can and you will achieve everything when the time is right. For some people that’s 15 years into putting in the hard work. For other people that’s 11 days out, for some it’s a 2-3 year period before they give up.

Entrepreneurship is 100% risk. There is no confirmation. But is there ever confirmation you’ll be successful with anything?

Don’t let your impatience get the best of you. If you started down this path to get rich, you’ve already failed in my eyes.

3. Do you know when to say no?

  1. People pleasers don’t get far in business or sales. You’ll never be able to get what you want in business when you’re trying to please everyone else.

  2. You need to say no more than yes. Tyler Denk, the founder of this newsletter platform and former Dare To Be Fearless guest wrote about this so well in his newsletter last week. Your ability to say no is what’ll get you to the top faster. This means no to many of the random people who email you asking to pick your brain. This means no to the people who your friend from 2nd grade group chats you with who thinks will be a good person for you to meet. This may mean no to the friend of your moms who wants to be an entrepreneur and wants to get a coffee.

Can we please stop asking strangers to get coffee?

I get where you’re coming from, and I so appreciate it, but if I got coffee with every person who emailed me I’d have no time to build a BIG FK’ING BUSINESS.
