Advertising: What am I doing wrong?

Advertising 101. As a personal brand, advertising can be very simple. Perhaps you need to do more on social media or come up with a concrete strategy about what sets your messaging apart. Different than a brand in a CPG or B2B space, you’re selling yourself and your ideas: not another product.

It’s important to know your audience, what platforms they use and to know your product!

If you’re selling a product and your sales strategy is like this:

  1. Ask probing questions to a potential client/buyer and wait for their response

  2. Remind them why you’re the best fit to help advise

  3. Wait for them to buy

You’re missing out on the main strategy behind selling. You don’t know what your product is like you thought you did.

Telling someone they should purchase from you or hire you because you’re an expert isn’t enough. What are you an expert in? Choose 1-2 fields that are super niche (for me, I’d say I’m an expert in personal branding and marketing) and roll with that.

1. Do: Emphasize Value Proposition

First off, what the heck does that mean?! This just means that in your advertising, you want to hook the viewer in and let them conclude that they NEED your product. This is best done by showing that your product has VALUE!

2. Don’t: Over promise!

If you see an ad with the tagline “Pants in every size!” and then you visit the website and their sizing only goes from XS-XL, it can be misleading. Don’t promise your viewers something that you can’t follow through with.

3. Really, DON’T!

Forget your audience! It is crazy how often big companies get lost in their product and lose customers because they are not catering to them. For example, if you’re product or service is tailored towards beginners, don’t use complicated language that only an expert like yourself understands. Conversely, if you’re targeting the elite members of your industry, don’t dumb it down too much!
