3 Ways To Find Your Tone On LinkedIn⚡
Hey Fearless Friend!
Today on Stay Fearless or Die Trying:
How to find your tone on LinkedIn
I’m speaking at Harvard on October 6th!
Fearless perks of the week!
How to say… pay me lots of $$$?
Following my chat with Elinor Honigstein, LinkedIn’s VP of Business Development, on different profile strategies and how to make sure your LinkedIn is in tip top shape, I realized the true potential of capitalizing on this platform. There is so much more to LinkedIn than just reviewing and posting.
Once you’ve taken a professional profile photo, uploaded your experiences, and added that you’re looking for work, you have another daunting task ahead of you: finding your perfect role in the perfect timeline without sounding desperate or unprofessional. With the unemployment rate at a high of 4.1%, we’ve got some work to do fearless fam.
I’ve compiled my thoughts into 3 insightful tips on finding your tone, as well as examples of top profiles that do it RIGHT! Don’t forget to connect with me here!
1. RESEARCH until you find your role!
I can’t stress how important research is in the process of finding your dream job. One thing my business coach has really helped me dial in on in the past few months is looking at larger partnerships that have a lot more potential than small, one off deals.
You need to look at established professionals in your field and base a lot of what you do on how they perceive their voice on LinkedIn, at least at the beginning. Their tone can be a great driver for how you establish yours. Different fields stress different things, some have room for humor, and some put importance on being straightforward with no frills. Here are two examples of successful profiles with WIDELY different tones.
Tanmoy uses a lot of humor in his “About” section and he shares personal anecdotes and stories about his life. This applies well to his role as a Peloton Talent Acquisition Agent. This is also more practical for a personal brand. | Lee focuses a lot on his experience, his growth throughout the years, and his qualifications. This is perfect for promoting why his marketing agency is worth someone’s time. |
2. Utilize mixed media!
LinkedIn is an amazing platform because it has so many tools to help you show off your potential. No matter what role you’re vying for, think of ways different media formats can get your points across. Could your profile benefit from a short introduction video to help introduce yourself? Or, could “A Day in The Life of A [insert job title here]” video be a helpful insight into the roles you fulfill? Here’s an example of a personal experience someone showed on LinkedIn that helps her grow her personal and business network:
Note: LinkedIn heavily pushes video, so opt to do personal videos and podcast style content to get more attention on LinkedIn.
3. Add your personal touch!
LinkedIn isn’t just a place to post your resume. People from different fields post regular content related to their market. Company updates, videos, and think pieces are all insights into your field that you can use to exemplify your tone. While you’re doing research (tip #1) follow profiles that have traction, post regularly, and are in your field. This way you can scroll through your feed and have a plethora of opportunities to respond to. Comment on posts with your opinion, repost articles with commentary on how changes in your field have affected your journey, and see what posts are gaining traction right now so you can make similar posts. This helps potential clients, recruiters, and investors understand that you are intelligent, involved, and up-to-date in your field. Disagree with something, but explain why! Show off your experience. Use personal examples from your career to relate to posts. All these tools will keep your profile busy, and exemplify your unique tone to prospects.
